Downtown Historic District
In 1988, sixty-five buildings in downtown Wapakoneta were added to the National Register of Historic Places as the Wapakoneta Commercial Historic District. The National Register is the official list of properties recognized by the United States government as worthy of preservation because of their significance in American history, architecture, archaeology, engineering, or culture.
Wapakoneta’s historic district includes buildings that date from the 1840s through the 1930s, and represent most American architectural styles from the period. Although some buildings have been altered at the storefront (first floor) level, most retain their beautiful original features on the upper stories.
Inclusion in the National Register is an honor to the community and a tribute to building owners and residents. It also provides significant financial benefits, including state and federal tax credits for appropriate rehabilitation work. The Wapakoneta Commercial Historic District is the only historic district in Auglaize County. You can see the full list of Auglaize County's Historic Places here.
